Eight Weeks of Learning, Grounded in Real Problems
For eight weeks, our scholars explored global health, digital literacy, academic writing, communication, professionalism, and capstone project development, always connecting what they learned to the real problems facing their communities.
Scholars from the University of Rwanda and African Health Sciences University, studying fields including medicine and midwifery, came into the program with different goals: some hoped to sharpen their digital and communication skills, others wanted to build their confidence and leadership, and others wanted to strengthen their connection to the people working to improve healthcare in Rwanda.
By the end, many pointed to the same lesson: improving healthcare is not something one person does alone. It takes commitment and collaboration among everyone involved. One scholar put it simply: it's not just about developing skills or gaining knowledge, but about the lifelong connections built along the way.
Capstone Projects: Putting Learning Into Practice
Each scholar's training culminated in a capstone project addressing a real issue in their own community. One scholar's project centered on holistic care for teen mothers and their children, using what they learned in global health equity to ask harder questions about their community and work toward practical solutions. Across cohorts, scholars have used their capstone projects to identify a community problem and design a solution alongside the people affected by it.
A Message to Our Scholars
At the closing ceremony, Joseph Ndagijimana offered the scholars a simple challenge:
"You do not have to wait until you become a senior healthcare provider or a leader to make an impact. You can start now."
To our scholars: congratulations. This is only the beginning. The ideas you carry forward, the questions you ask, and the work you will do in your communities and careers will create impact beyond what any of us can imagine today.
Thank You
None of this would be possible without support. A sincere thank you to Isomo for their mentorship, guidance, and continued support, to every instructor, mentor, and team member who made this milestone possible, and to Yale University for believing in us and supporting our initiative in every way possible. We don't take these opportunities for granted.
